Introduction to the product — Saral IFRS 9 Platform

Introduction to the Product. This is the story of how we — with zero fintech knowledge — built a comprehensive banking compliance platform from scratch in collaboration with a big Audit Firm. Stats: 02 banks onboarded during development, 70% reduction in processing time, 100% IFRS 9 compliance.

My role — UI/UX Designer

My role: UI/UX Designer. Over the 10 month engagement, I owned the design process end-to-end across every flow — Information Architecture, Requirements & Research, Custom Components, Interaction Design & Micro Animations, Dev Reviews, Stakeholder Reviews, Design System, Dev Collaboration.

The problem — ECL Workflow Transformation

The problem: ECL Workflow Transformation. Before this product existed, the entire ECL workflow lived in sprawling spreadsheets — hundreds of columns, manual data entry, and calculations done in isolation. Suffering users: Credit Risk Analysts, Finance & Compliance Officers, Audit Managers. The real cost: Painful Comparisons, Wasted Time, Regulatory Risk, Fragmented Collaboration, Human Error, No Audit Trail. How might we help credit risk analysts and compliance officers run their entire ECL workflow from data input to final risk output in one place, accurately and efficiently?

Ground up learnings — Research & Domain Learning

Ground up learnings: Research & Domain Learning. The core formula to calculate expected credit loss is EAD × PD × LGD — Exposure at Default, Probability of Default, Loss Given Default. Work pattern: Client & BA sessions, Weekly syncs, Learning by Designing. Key takeaways: Multi step is mandatory, Preserve exact language, Shared flow structure, Purposeful density.

This wasn’t a consumer product with casual users. Everyone interacting with this platform was a trained finance professional working under real regulatory pressure. Understanding their roles, goals, and frustrations shaped almost every design decision we made.

A structured approach to complexity

We adapted a flow-by-flow iterative loop — tackling one calculation flow at a time, learning the domain as we went, across 10 months.

A grounded, restrained system with one decisive green accent and clear semantic states — built on Untitled UI and extended with 40+ custom components for compliance-specific patterns.

Inter across the system. Tight tracking for display, comfortable rhythm for body, mono for amounts and IDs.

Reflections & learnings

What this project taught me

Designing for banking compliance with zero prior domain knowledge was the most challenging — and rewarding — experience of my career.

You don't need to be a domain expert to start designing

We began with zero fintech knowledge. By using wireframing as a learning tool and collaborating closely with BAs and our Domain Partner, we built domain understanding through the design process itself — not before it.

Stakeholder syncs are non-negotiable

Our weekly meetings with the Domain Partner were the backbone of this project. Every design decision was validated against real regulatory requirements, preventing costly redesigns later.

A design system saves you when scope explodes

Switching to Untitled UI mid-project felt risky, but it was the best decision we made. Custom components couldn't scale with 40+ features. A mature design system gave us speed and consistency.

Progressive disclosure tames enterprise complexity

Hundreds of configuration options become manageable when layered properly. Smart defaults, step-by-step wizards, and drill-down patterns made the system approachable without hiding power.

Don't be afraid to redesign what you've already built

Half our flows had old designs from the 'no navigation' phase. Systematically upgrading them to the new standard was tedious but essential — consistency builds user trust in enterprise tools.

Enterprise UX deserves empathy too

Bank employees use this tool daily under regulatory pressure. Small touches — clear error reports, progress indicators for 4-hour computations, smart period selectors — made a real difference.
